Skeletal size means the patient’s frame — limb length and rib-cage dimensions, which change little as body fat changes. Judge it on examination, or measure it: the leg index measurement (patella to calcaneal tuber) with rib-cage circumference at the ninth rib is the basis of the feline body mass index (Hawthorne and Butterwick 2000). Used here only to sense-check the estimate; it never changes the calculation.

What each step of the obesity workup involves
Then loop: re-weigh, re-score BCS and MCS at 4–12 weeks, revise the ideal body weight and the weight-loss plan. The endpoint is a body condition — BCS 5/9 with normal muscle mass — not a body weight. The calculated ideal weight is the estimated weight at BCS 5/9.
How the calculation works, and why the estimate changes
Each bar is the patient at one body condition score. The navy segment is lean mass, held at 80% of the ideal body weight. The colored segment is fat. Each BCS unit above 5/9 adds about 10% of ideal body weight, almost all of it fat, so the percent body fat climbs through the bands in the AAHA 2021 table. BCS 9/9 has no top: a dog at 50% body fat is 1.6 × its ideal weight and still scores 9/9.

The arithmetic
- BCS method (BCS 6–8/9): IBW = current weight ÷ [1 + 0.10 × (BCS − 5)]. Each unit above 5/9 is about 10% of body weight (AAHA 2021; German et al. 2009: median 10%, range 5–15%).
- Body-fat method: IBW = current weight × (1 − body fat ÷ 100) ÷ 0.80. Assumes 20% body fat at ideal and lean mass preserved (AAHA 2021, Table 2 footnote). Preferred at BCS 9/9.
- BCS 4–5/9: current weight is the IBW; record it. BCS 1–3/9: not validated; investigate underweight.
- Dogs and cats, same arithmetic: the AAHA 2021 multipliers are published for both species, so the calculation does not differ by species. The evidence behind them does. The prospective DEXA validation (German et al. 2009) is canine; in cats body fat did not differ between BCS 8/9 and 9/9 (Bjornvad et al. 2011). Feline results therefore add a check against skeletal size and a reminder to revise early.
- Why the ideal band is not “plus or minus 10%”: BCS 4/9 sits below 5/9 (about 0.94–0.99 × IBW), so the ideal band is roughly 0.94–1.05 × IBW. A 22 lb dog with a 20 lb IBW is already 10% over.
Decision flow: setting an ideal body weight
Formulas are the fallback. The most accurate IBW is a weight the patient actually held at BCS 4–5/9 as a skeletally mature adult, documented in the record.

- Weigh the patient; assign BCS and MCS. BCS estimates fat, MCS estimates lean mass, and they can move in opposite directions.
- BCS 4–5/9: the current weight is the ideal body weight. Record it as the reference weight.
- BCS 1–3/9: the formulas are not validated. Investigate the cause of underweight.
- A documented adult weight at BCS 4–5/9 takes precedence over any formula; adjust downward for muscle loss since that visit.
- BCS 6–8/9 with no lean-weight record: BCS method (÷1.10, ÷1.20, ÷1.30).
- BCS 9/9: body-fat method preferred; without an estimate, ÷1.40 gives the upper limit.
- Check the estimate against breed and sex range, skeletal size and MCS; a breed table never overrides a BCS.
- Record the estimated IBW and build the energy plan from it.
- Reassess at 4–12 weeks and revise the ideal body weight and the weight-loss plan whenever the BCS changes. Feed to the desired body condition: the endpoint is BCS 5/9 with normal muscle mass.

Sex-specific standard values apply where the breed standard gives them. Mixed-breed dogs and dogs under 12–18 months need the record-weight or BCS route.
Cats: expected weights, and why cats differ
Why cats are handled differently. The multipliers are the same — AAHA 2021 Table 2 covers both species — but three things change how far to trust them. The prospective DEXA validation (German et al. 2009) was done in dogs. The feline scale saturates near the top: body fat did not differ between BCS 8/9 and 9/9 in indoor neutered cats, and mean body fat at BCS 5/9 was 32% (Bjornvad et al. 2011). And there is no feline equivalent of a breed weight standard: registries describe size in words, and published numeric ranges disagree by 30% or more. So for cats the ideal weight comes from a recorded lean weight, skeletal size, and BCS — not from a breed — and the estimate is revised earlier and more often.
- Most cats in practice are domestic shorthairs, mediumhairs or longhairs. Veterinarian-reviewed references put most adult domestic cats at about 8–12 lb (3.6–5.4 kg) at ideal condition, 10 lb (4.5 kg) typical, small-framed cats about 6–8 lb (2.7–3.6 kg), large-framed cats higher. A typical range, not a validated cutoff.
- Pedigree cats: registries describe size in words and published numeric ranges disagree by 30% or more, so no numeric breed targets are given for cats.
- Very large cats are real. Cats of 25–30 lb (11.3–13.6 kg) are seen in practice, and that is where a BCS-only estimate is least reliable — use the second table below to see how much the result varies with the assumed ideal.
Cats: expected weight bands for an assumed ideal weight
The multipliers are identical to the canine chart because AAHA 2021 Table 2 covers both species. What differs is choosing the ideal in the first column: there is no feline breed standard to anchor it, so it comes from a recorded lean weight, frame size, or BCS. Read across from whichever ideal you have judged, not from a breed.

Cats: how far above ideal is this cat?
Percent above ideal for a given weight today, read against three plausible ideals. Green is within the ideal band, amber overweight, coral the obesity range. It shows how much the result varies with the assumed ideal, which is the principal source of uncertainty in cats — a 16 lb (7.3 kg) cat is 33% over if its ideal is 12 lb (5.4 kg) and 100% over if it is 8 lb (3.6 kg).

Both tables use the AAHA 2021 multipliers. Feline caveats still apply: body fat did not differ between BCS 8/9 and 9/9 in a DEXA study of indoor neutered cats, mean body fat at BCS 5/9 was 32%, ideal may include BCS 4/9 in inactive neutered cats, and BCS 6/9 is an acceptable individualized target in some older cats. The assessed BCS determines the classification; these bands only show what a chosen ideal implies.

Read before use. Estimates are population averages; in the only prospective test in dogs the per-unit change ranged 5–15% and estimates could over- or under-shoot. Reassess every 4–12 weeks.
