About BCS & MCS charts

Body Condition Score and Muscle Condition Score are complementary clinical tools. Used together with body weight, they help veterinary teams assess adiposity, muscle loss, and body composition changes that weight alone can miss.

Why dog and cat BCS are species-specific

Dog and cat BCS charts should be interpreted by species. The same number does not always carry identical wording or clinical meaning across dogs and cats.

For example, canine BCS 4/9 is commonly included in the healthy or lean range, while feline BCS 5/9 is the ideal score on the cat chart. Use the full species-specific description, images, and palpation criteria rather than the number alone.

BCS 7–9: screening, not diagnosis

BCS 7–9 is a clinical obesity screening zone, not a diagnosis by itself. A high BCS should prompt a more complete assessment for excess adiposity, muscle condition, nutritional history, clinical signs, functional changes, and adiposity-associated disease.

This approach helps distinguish excess adiposity from clinical obesity and supports more individualized patient care.

Why MCS should be scored separately

Muscle Condition Score, or MCS, evaluates skeletal muscle separately from body fat. This matters because a dog or cat can have excess body fat and clinically meaningful muscle loss at the same time.

MCS should be assessed by visual examination and palpation, then recorded as normal, mild loss, moderate loss, or severe loss.

Why the MCS chart includes five palpation sites

The APOP/WPOA MCS chart evaluates temporal muscles, scapulae, epaxial muscles, pelvic region, and hindlimb / caudal thigh. The added hindlimb site supports a more complete assessment because muscle loss may not occur evenly across all regions.

Palpate each site, compare left and right sides, identify the region with the greatest muscle loss, and record the overall MCS from that site rather than averaging across sites.

Use body weight, BCS, and MCS together

Body weight shows change over time, BCS estimates adiposity, and MCS evaluates muscle loss. Recording all three gives a clearer picture of nutritional status and helps veterinary teams identify patients who may need earlier intervention, closer monitoring, or a more individualized nutrition plan.
